Amazwi Ethu: Imbizo for Youth Expression

On 30 September 2006 City at Peace - Cape Town hosted its first annual festival called "Amazwi Ethu: Imbizo for Youth Expression" at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Amphitheatre in Cape Town.

The event was planned and organised by youth from the 2006 cast of City at Peace - Cape Town. After premiering their original musical "IBaru: The Outsider" at Artscape in July 2006, the youth wanted to engage in projects that would provide more opportunities for youth voices to be heard.

They have created drama, music, dance and poetry as well as visual art to be presented at the event, all centred on the theme of issues that are affecting young people's lives. City at Peace has also invited its partner organisations working with youth to attend the event and have their youth participants present their own creative work.

"This event is where we show our talents, where we show we are beautiful Africans. We can show we're not just sitting doing nothing but we are facing life in a positive way," says Luvuyo Mpofu, 19 who has been involved with City at Peace since its beginning in August 2005.

iBaru: The Outsider - The 2006 Production

How do you live your life, and stay true to yourself, in a place where you are treated like an outsider?

iBaru: The Outsider is an original musical production created by a diverse cast of youth from across Cape Town based on the stories of their lives.

Dazzled by the city lights, traffic, pace, smell and the rhythm that seems hard to keep up with, a young man's mouth slowly gapes open with amazement. Suddenly a shout "iBaru u yaphi?"

Nothing But Lemons - The 2005 Production

The first original musical written by a diverse cast of 50 teenagers from across the City of Cape Town premiered at the Little Theatre on 15 and 16 December 2005.

This production is based on the stories of the lives of the 2005 cast, with all original material created by them. This play is the story of siblings Thando and Miesie, recent orphans struggling to make a life for themselves in Cape Town. Through their journey, we witness the stories of many families and communities, and find out how they overcome when life offers up nothing but lemons.

The premiere was a great success thanks to the hard work of the cast and staff. We offer our thanks to all the supportive audience members and everyone at the Little Theatre.
